I am a baby boomer and in my parent’s day they bought a home and stayed in it for life or until their age mandated they sell. My mother has been in her home for forty-six years!
Today boomers and millennials are trading real estate every five to seven years. Starter home, family home, downsizing home and retirement home; all these terms now define our real estate needs by the stage of life we are in.
We bought our first home in 1984. It was the old farmhouse my husband grew up in. He lived most of his life in this three- bedroom home with his five siblings and parents. Not long after renovating we had our first child and found the house too small for us! Time to sell.
On to the next house, another child comes along and so it went for two more moves finally settling with three children into the home we stayed in for twenty years.
The years go by and we found ourselves in a large two -story house designed for living with three growing children. Our millennials had all left the nest, the pool sat idle, the lower level rec room, bar and bathroom sat empty.
Time for another move to one level living and will this be the last? No, it won’t be. We will stay where we are until we can no longer take care of the property. Then time to age gracefully into a retirement living community or an apartment, there will be one more sale for us.
Let’s count the moves, pre-children number one, post children number two and three, empty nesters number four and our senior living move will be number five!
So, real estate is not just about buying and selling homes, it is part of the journey of your life’s many stages, happy memories of times past, and exciting dreams of days to come.
Taking the time to understand what part of the journey our clients are on is the most important aspect of what we do. We are with you to navigate the journey. If you’re ready to start a new home buying or selling journey we’re here for you.
